A PET scan is similar to a CT scan; however, PET scan can detect live cancer tissue. Prior to a PET scan, the patient receives an injection of a substance into a vein that contains a type of sugar attached to a radioactive isotope. The cancer cells \u201ctake up\u201d the sugar and attached isotope. These areas of disease will show up as bright spots on the PET scan.
